Mad With Joy on the Trail to Looking Glass Lake
August 22, 2012 § 7 Comments
“People from a planet without flowers would think we must be mad with joy the whole time to have such things about us” – Iris Murdoch.

I hiked with the mister and a dear friend to Looking Glass Lake, near Mt Adams Washington this week. Along our path, so many wildflowers and so much joy.
“Give me odorous at sunrise a garden of beautiful flowers where I can walk undisturbed” – Walt Whitman.
“Earth laughs in flowers” – Ralph Waldo Emerson.
“I will be the gladdest thing
Under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one.” – Edna St Vincent Millay, Afternoon on a Hill.

Beautiful. I hadn’t thought about this before, but isn’t the very nature of a “trail” something marvelous in and of itself? That so many others have trod the same path for nothing else than to enjoy the simplicity of being out of doors.
Thanks for posting! Enjoy your scrabble game.
Thank you! I’m losing one game (miserably) and winning in the other (barely).
What a lovely post for today! Did you see any devil’s paintbrush? It looks like the other paintbrush, only smaller, and it is a blended fiery desert color of bright yellow and orangish red. I think it grows in most of the northern states, but I’m not sure about Washington. I can tell you had a great time! Thanks for sharing!
We saw at least two varietals of paintbrush, this red one and one that was almost pink-y/purple-y. It was a great time…
Dynamite post. I must say, Deborah, you said something to the effect that we must be joined at the brain. Well, try this one on for size: Last night at my writer’s workshop, we critiqued the leader of the group’s submission about a novel he is writing in which Walt Whitman plays a major role. He is sitting in Pfaff’s Pub in New York City with none other than Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson says of Leave of Grass, “Genius is the activity that repairs the decay of things.” Pretty crazy, huh?

Lovely coincidence. I love them both. I was born in the wrong era!
